Week 5: Art Girl Rescue Part 1

*CRACK-CRACK-CRACK*

The sharp report of gunfire filled Alex's ears as he lay prone behind a small stone wall. He pushed the mag release button on his assault rifle and felt around his vest for another.

"Damn, last one"

He smacked the new magazine into place and snapped the charging handle back. Slowly, he inched his way along the low wall, pausing to listen for footsteps. He came to a small hole in the wall where he was able to peek through. He saw ten enemy combatants, and a machine gun emplacement. Behind them, the compound where his wife, Art Girl, was being held. Her name wasn't really Art Girl, of course, but that's what her codename had been in the mission.

Art Girl was kidnapped by Samu Al-Hayeed, leader of the "Nice Guys" terrorist group, an ironic name, since they were anything but. Fortunately, Alex, Art Girl's husband, just so happened to be a U.S. Marine. He and his squad had been dispatched to extract Art Girl from Al-Hayeed's clutches. Now, Alex was the only one left.

The guard was heavy, and Alex knew he would lose in a head-on assault. His only hope was to wait until night, hoping that they would send out patrols to find him before dusk. He could dispatch the scouts one by one, and then assault the compound in the dead of night.

Alex reached the end of the wall. It was ten yards to a cluster of stone buildings that would shield him as he retreated further back into the surrounding neighborhood. He caught his breath, and in one motion, leapt to his feet and sprinted to the nearest building.

Shouts of the enemy and hot bullets were right behind him, but he crashed through the door of the building and made his way further away from the compound, stopping occasionally to set traps for the soldiers who would inevitably follow him.

As the sun began to set, Alex could hear the crunch of feet on gravel, and the low mumble of the soldier's voices. His time to strike back had come. He prayed for Art Girl's safety, and promised her that he would rescue her before the morning.

END PART 1

Author's note:

This is based off of the Ramayana, with Rama going to rescue Sita. Although I put it in a modern war setting and added some story elements that actually happened to a friend. That's why the picture is that because I ended up using the idea for a blog post.

  1. This is great, I can't help but picture Solid Snake for what Alex's character looks like. I kinda wish you'd described Art Girl a bit more besides being his wife, maybe have him lament on why that's specifically her code name! You did a good job of world building through the descriptions of sounds here, the gunfire and the ground beneath his feet all seem so personal.

  2. Nichijou is the weirdest show I've ever had the pleasure of watching. I love it (that OST tho). The over-the-top reactions for slice-of-life moments - beautifully done and hilarious. I also like the modern take of Rama being a marine and having to rescue his wife from a kidnapper. Did your friend go through a similar situation???

Looking forward to reading the rest of the story.
